In today’s fast-moving financial environment, where algorithms crunch data faster than we can blink and automation seems to promise answers to every challenge, it’s easy to overlook the enduring value of fundamentals. But as someone who works with treasury teams across some of the world’s leading organisations, I’ve found this truth to be unshakable:

In complex times, the basics matter more than ever.

The Comfort of Complexity

Treasury has certainly evolved. With the rise of real-time payments, advanced cash analytics, AI-driven forecasting tools and increasingly globalised operations, complexity is part of the day-to-day. And while many of these innovations bring value, there’s a risk: teams begin to focus on tools and tech, at the expense of mastering the foundational principles that underpin everything we do.

Put simply: it’s hard to innovate if your foundation is not solid and supportive.  I have seen instances where treasury paper’s have been overly complex as they try to address everything at once, not being able to lean upon supportive governance documents.

In fact, the most common challenges I see inside treasury teams—cash visibility issues, unclear hedging strategies, liquidity mismanagement—don’t stem from a lack of tools. They stem from a disconnect with the basics.

What Are the Fundamentals?

At its core, treasury is about protecting and optimising the financial health of a business. The pillars of this function haven’t changed:

  • Cash Management – Knowing where your money is, where it’s going, and how it’s working for you.
  • Liquidity Planning – Ensuring the business has the right amount of cash at the right time to meet its obligations.
  • Risk Management – Identifying and managing exposure to interest rate, FX, and credit risk.
  • Bank Relationship Management – Maintaining strong, strategic partnerships with financial institutions.
  • Governance & Controls – Enforcing sound policy, compliance, and reporting frameworks.

These fundamentals are not optional. They are essential building blocks for every high-functioning treasury team

Why Fundamentals Are More Important Than Ever

We’re in a new era of financial uncertainty. Interest rates are higher. Markets are more volatile. Regulatory pressure is increasing. And businesses are under more scrutiny to operate with discipline and strategic foresight.

When disruption hits—be it geopolitical events, market volatility or a cyber incident—teams that understand the fundamentals don’t panic. They already have the systems, policies and processes in place to respond with confidence.

Teams that don’t? They scramble.

Strong fundamentals create flexibility. They give treasury the tools to respond, not just react.

You Can’t Automate Understanding

It’s easy to think that modern software can “solve” treasury problems. But automation is only as good as the logic behind it. A dashboard won’t help if the data feeding it is incomplete. A policy won’t guide action if no one understands the “why” behind it.

That’s where training comes in.

Helping teams revisit the basics—through real-world examples, practical frameworks and interactive learning—rebuilds confidence and capability. It fosters critical thinking. And it aligns the function with the broader goals of the business.

In my training programs, we go beyond “how” to look at “why.” Because when people understand the core principles, they make better decisions—no matter what challenges come their way.

A Strategic Reset

Returning to fundamentals isn’t about going backward. It’s about strengthening the base so you can go further, faster. It’s about reducing operational risk. Increasing internal credibility. And creating a more agile, forward-thinking treasury function.

So if you’re leading a treasury team—ask yourself:

  • Are we clear on our liquidity position?
  • Do we have a robust, repeatable cash forecasting process?
  • Do our people understand our treasury policy—not just what’s in it, but why it exists?
  • Are we managing risk proactively, or just responding when issues arise?

If the answers feel uncertain, it may be time for a reset.

Reconnect With the Basics?

I work with treasury teams globally to re-embed these core principles—tailored to your business, your challenges, and your strategic goals.

Whether you’re onboarding new staff, levelling up your team, or just want to get everyone back on the same page, I offer training programs that are practical, engaging, and built on years of experience with leading organisations.

Because no matter how complex the world becomes, the fundamentals of treasury remain your strongest advantage.
